Chamoli district in Uttarakhand experienced an earthquake of magnitude 3.3 in the early hours of Saturday, July 19, 2025, as per the National Centre for Seismology (NCS). The tremor was recorded at 12:02 AM IST at a depth of 10 km beneath the surface.


According to NCS, the epicentre was located at latitude 30.51°N and longitude 79.33°E, about 22 km west-southwest of Joshimath in Chamoli, Uttarakhand. The quake was classified as “reviewed” on the NCS map and is considered mild on the seismic intensity scale.


No reports of casualties or damage have surfaced yet. Chamoli lies in a seismically active zone of the Himalayas, making it prone to frequent low-to-moderate intensity earthquakes.


This event comes just days after another tremor measuring 3.2 struck Uttarkashi district on July 8 at 1:07 PM IST. That quake occurred at a depth of 5 km, with the epicentre located at latitude 31.22°N and longitude 78.22°E.


Authorities have urged residents to remain calm but stay cautious, as aftershocks are possible though unlikely to cause harm at such low magnitudes.
