New Delhi . The engines of aircraft are the lives of any airplane, but do they have any expiry date? The answer is not technically. The flight engine does not have any fixed expiry date (such as a food item), but has age and performance limitations, which determine the flight, flight cycles and maintenance conditions.
Flight Cycle: Once a flight bicycle is completed by mixing takeoff and landing. The engine comes the most pressure during takeoff and landing. Most of the engines are designed for 10,000 to 20,000 bicycles.
At the same time, the flight hours suggest how many hours of flight did the engine spend in total. Large jet engines such as GE90 or Trent 1000 are designed to remain in service for 40,000–50,000 hours. Some parts may also weaken over time, even though the use has decreased. Therefore, companies recommend converting some parts to the prescribed years.
State -of -the -art models such as GE9X or Trent XWB are known for low fuel consumption and longevity. Now question whether engines run for eternity? The answer is not. Constant use, temperature, pressure and vibration cause the engine parts. It is mandatory to check the engine on every 1000–2000 flight bicycles and overhell every 5,000–8,000 bicycles. Sometimes the cost of maintenance increases so much that it is better to install a new engine.
Why do accidents happen when the engines are so safe?
For example, on 12 June 2025, Ahmedabad’s flight was held in AI-171, where a fuel cutoff switch disturbances were closed. It was a mechanical defect, not of age. That is why regular inspection and quality control are very important. The flight engine has no fixed expiry date, but these flight bicycles, flight hours and maintenance based on maintenance age. These engines can provide safe service for decades by correct care and regulatory adherence.
