The trending Stanley cups, which have taken the internet by storm as a hydration essential, might be causing more than just quenched thirst. It could be ageing your face prematurely.

Dr Kate Jameson has sounded the alarm: "Staying hydrated is one of the best things you can do for your skin, but the way you drink matters too.

"If you're relying on a straw-top bottle all day, it's worth switching up your habits to protect your skin long-term."

She further explains the risk of developing lip wrinkles: "Lip wrinkles are one of the first signs of ageing, and because the skin around the mouth is thin, it's particularly vulnerable to forming deep-set lines.

"If you're using a straw-top bottle every day, you may start seeing signs of ageing sooner than expected.

"Many people are diligent about skin care but unknowingly contribute to premature ageing through daily habits.

"Regular use of straw-based bottles encourages the same muscle contractions that lead to perioral lines, which can become deeper over time."

The Medical Director atpointed out that the act of using a straw causes the face to tense and pucker, potentially leading to fine lines known as smokers' lines.

However, with the rise in popularity of reusable straw bottles, this issue is no longer confined to smokers.

If you're using a straw-top bottle as part of your daily routine, this habit could be keeping you hydrated but also subtly encouraging the development of fine lines.

The change isn't immediate, but consistent use of a straw over months or years can lead to collagen breakdown.

This process could speed up for those already susceptible to fine lines. However, there is a method to prevent it and potentially reverse any existing damage.

Dr Jameson suggests using open cups or bottles where possible to avoid repetitive puckering. Applying hyaluronic acid-based balms on your lips can also maintain hydration.

Applying an SPF on your lips daily can also help keep the skin looking fresh and youthful as sun exposure can exacerbate these fine lines. Numerous skincare treatments like retinol also work to fill in the gaps these fine lines create.
