New discovery will give blind lights

Here, scientists have given new direction in the field of ophthalmology by transplantation in CALEC (Cultivated Autologist Limbal Epithelial Cells) in their recent research. Actually, scientists of Mass Eye and Ear, Mass General Brigham and Harvard Medical School have developed a new stem-cell technology together. Under this, limbal stem cells are now developed from the healthy eye of the patient. These cells are removed and cultured in the lab and transplanted into damaged cornea. This process removes the cornea dead cells and revives its structure.

With this new innovation, where the eyes of 50 percent of the patients in 3 months were completely cured. This success reached 79 percent on 12 months and 77 percent on 18 months. In addition to a few patients, there has been a slight or full improvement in more than 90 percent of the patients.

What used to happen earlier

It is said that earlier in many countries including India, it was difficult to find Donor Corn. About 1.2 lakh cornea transplant is required here, but only 25,000 are completed. Not only this, earlier the bad cornea was not of use in any way, but with the new technology, transplantation has been made easier than bad cornea. This research is currently in the initial stage and will require a clinical trial before applying it on a large scale.
