Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes claims he’s only concerned about his own haircut despite superfan Frank Ilett now closing in on the end of his challenge. Ilett, known as The United Strand on social media, promised not to trim his hair until United won five games in a row.

The Red Devils are now just one win away from achieving that, having beaten Manchester City, Arsenal, Fulham and Tottenham under Michael Carrick in recent weeks.

And despite being keen to make it five in a row, it appears that Ilett’s challenge hasn’t quite registered for United skipper Fernandes, yet. Asked about the challenge, the Portuguese playmaker replied: “I need to book for myself, I don’t look at other people.

“I don't look if they need to go to the hair dresser or not, that is not important for me.”

Fernandes’ response is intriguing, given the haircut challenge has already been mentioned within the United dressing room. Speaking to The Sun, a source said: “The players are really enjoying their recent upturn in fortune and the vibe at the training ground is very positive.

“They are well aware of Frank because he pops up on their social media. Some of them were having a laugh and a joke and said: ‘Come on, let’s give this guy a haircut’.”

Ilett in the meantime has spoken out on a potential end to his long wait for a haircut. He said: “Carrick is at the wheel, this hair is going soon, West Ham next, four out of five done. This is the first time it’s been four in a row since I started the challenge.”

He added: “This time it’s happening. Thank you so much to Carrick, thank you, thank you, thank you. There will be a watchalong for the fifth game against West Ham. Some exciting plans coming up, more details to come.”

While Ilett has not yet confirmed his plans, he previously hinted that he wanted to get his long-awaited haircut at United’s historic home.

He said: "It has been very difficult. But I want to do the hair cut at Old Trafford, or at least somewhere nearby. Either way, there's plenty of time to plan it!"

Speaking about United’s run of form after the win vs Spurs, Fernandes said: “This is very good and very nice but we need to keep going. If you don't win the next one and the next one you will get back into the same place where you don't feel comfortable, you lose confidence and struggle to believe in everything you have been doing until now.

“But, we have been doing very well until now to do everything that Michael and the staff have been asking of us and we have been very brave taking responsibility in some moments in the game to go and play and do whatever you need to do to win the game. The main focus is the next game, it's four wins in a row, this one is nice, but we need to make it five now."
