On Monday, Piyush Goyal, the Union Minister for Commerce and Industry, expressed admiration for the US cricket team's performance against India during the T20 World Cup, despite their defeat. He humorously remarked that had the US implemented zero tariffs on Indian products, they might have secured a win. Goyal made these comments at a reception hosted by US Ambassador Sergio Gor, who attended the match on Saturday.
"Although the US did not clinch victory in the T20 World Cup match against India, I must commend their performance. For a nation that has only recently embraced cricket, their efforts were remarkable. Ambassador Sergio was present to witness the game. He highlighted that the US lost by 18 runs, and I jokingly suggested that if they had eliminated reciprocal tariffs, they might have triumphed. I was genuinely impressed by the US cricket team's outstanding display," Goyal stated.
India achieved its inaugural victory in the tournament, defeating the USA by 29 runs. After being invited to bat first, the Indian team posted a score of 161 runs for the loss of 9 wickets in 20 overs. Suryakumar Yadav led the charge with an impressive unbeaten score of 84 runs off 49 balls, including 10 fours and four sixes. Contributions also came from wicketkeeper Ishan Kishan, who scored 20 runs off 16 balls, and Tilak Varma, who added 25 runs off 16 balls.
For the USA, Shadley van Schalkwyk and Harmeet Singh were notable bowlers, taking 4 wickets for 29 runs and 2 wickets for 26 runs, respectively.
In their chase, the USA managed to score 132 runs for 8 wickets, falling short by 29 runs. Key performances included Milind Kumar, who scored 34 runs off 34 balls, and both Sanjay Krishnamurthi and Shubham Ranjane, who contributed 37 runs each. For India, Mohammed Siraj was the standout bowler with 3 wickets for 29 runs, supported by Axar Patel and Arshdeep Singh, who took 2 wickets each.
