A man has died after reportedly slicing his penis off and then taking the knife to his neck. Police in Los Angeles, California, were called in the early hours of Saturday morning to reports of a man self mutilating in the street. A photographer from OnSceneTV who witnessed the incident claimed the man "cut his penis off and bled to death".

The man is also alleged to have slit his throat, stabbed himself, and tried to cut off his own arm. A white tent was quickly put in place at the scene by police. Images from the area show pools of blood on the pavement next to the white tent.

Graphic footage also purports to show what appears to be a large wound in a man's groin area.

The LA Police Department confirmed an investigation into the death, which occurred at the intersection of Figuerora Street and Pico Boulevard at around 3.40am over the weekend.

Police quickly shut down roads following the incident, as an LA County Medical Examiner will seek to determine his identity.

However, they did not confirm what part of the man had been injured, nor did they know his motivation or state of mind at the time.

TMZ reported sources claiming he inflicted multiple injuries on himself with a sharp instrument.
