Udupi: The intensity of summer is increasing day by day. Lists of Gram Panchayat areas in both districts likely to face drinking water shortages have already been prepared. Local bodies have been given necessary instructions for managing the summer water crisis. Meanwhile, the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) work, which has been ongoing for the past six to seven years, continues to drag on. Water is not being supplied to anyone's home yet.

Although the project to provide pure water to every household through taps under the Jal Jeevan Mission was implemented in 2019, clean water is not being properly supplied anywhere under this scheme. In most places, the pipeline work has been completed and tap connections have been provided to houses. The tap stands installed near homes are reaching a state of disrepair without being used.

When will the water arrive?

Even in places where JJM work is completed, water is not flowing. This is because, in most areas, work was carried out without properly identifying a water source. Consequently, only pipelines and taps have been installed, but no water connection has been made. Therefore, the question of when water will arrive has become common among the public.

Usage of old pipelines

To prevent water supply issues during summer, measures are being taken to connect JJM works to old pipelines to supply water to houses. In some places, water supply is being conducted on an experimental basis through new connections as well.

No financial constraints

Most government projects face issues with grant sanctions. There are often allegations that even after work is completed, funds do not arrive and numerous hurdles exist for bills to be passed. However, this is not the case with JJM work. In most places, 100% of the funds were paid even before the work was completed. Many works are still unfinished, yet the contractors have been paid. There are also allegations that the work was sub-contracted in several places. It is being said that releasing funds before the completion of work is the reason for such a long delay.

100% achievement in Puttur

In the undivided Dakshina Kannada districts, 100% of the work has been completed in Puttur taluk. This means tap connections have been provided via pipelines to all houses identified under the Jal Jeevan Mission. In all other taluks, more than 75% of the work has been completed.
