The Madison star Kurt Russell shared a heartwarming familial link to a key aspect about his character Preston Clyburn in the inspiring and tragic new drama from Taylor Sheridan.

The Yellowstone creator's latest project stars Michelle Pfeiffer, Russell's one-time former co-star, as Stacy Clyburn, the matriarch of an elite family in New York who are uprooted from their life of luxury to live in Montana following a devastating accident.

Premiering today (Saturday, 14th March) on Paramount+, viewers will be able to witness the first three episodes before the second half of the series drops next week.

Speaking exclusively to Reach at the show's London premiere, Russell touched on his on-screen reunion with Pfeiffer nearly four decades after they first worked together.

"I didn't get the girl in Tequila Sunrise, so I finally got to be married to her for 40 years in this [series]," he quipped.

"It was great, that connection from working together and having a really good time all those years ago... what was it, 1988? Michelle and I had a really great time.

"It was a more difficult time for her in terms of what the production itself offered and created, but this was just smooth sailing. This was a dream, just a pleasure every day. I worked primarily with Matthew Fox and Michelle and I just wanted to be able to hopefully bring to this character what Michelle's character needs.

"And what the family needs to know about him, feel about him. When they move from New York to Montana, that's when you really begin to discover a lot of things they didn't know about their father."

Russell and Pfeiffer are joined by a star-studded cast for the series, which also includes Lost's Matthew Fox as Preston's brother Paul, as well as Suits' Patrick J Adams as Preston and Stacy's son-in-law Russell and The Good Doctor's Beau Garrett as their daughter, Abigail.

Many of Preston and Paul's scenes together were spent fly-fishing, a pastime Russell shares a deep family connection with due to his grandfather, Bing Russell, previously owning the Kennebago Lake Club in Rangeley, Maine.

"I grew up with that," he reminisced. "I was never a great fly-fisher, and I've got a son, Oliver Hudson, who's a great fly-fisherman, and a really good deep sea fisherman. I was more of a hunter, but I do appreciate the aspect of fly-fishing that is hunting fish rather than hoping to catch something.

"But I like what it has to say about self-reflection when you're out there doing it."

While Russell doesn't consider himself a pro, he apparently didn't require much training to lock into this key physical aspect of his performance.

"I've done my share of it," he said. "It's like riding a bike. Every year we float down the Roaring Fork River and go fly-fishing, it's something I've done all my life.

"What was fun in this was to be not as good as my brother. He's sort of my mentor because he's lived there and he's doing it every day. What I love is that he appreciates what his brother is getting out of it. It was fun to be not so good at it."
