More than 1.56 lakh children in Uttar Pradesh have secured admission to private schools under provisions of the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, commonly known as the RTE Act, during the first two phases of the admission process for the current academic session. According to officials from the Uttar Pradesh Basic Education Department, the admission process is being carried out through an online system that includes application submission, verification, and seat allotment through a lottery mechanism. The system is designed to allocate seats reserved for children from economically weaker and disadvantaged sections of society in private schools.
Data released by the department indicates that more than 1.09 lakh seats were allotted in the first phase of admissions. In the second phase, conducted through another lottery draw, over 47,000 additional students were granted admission. Combined, these two rounds have provided school placements to more than 1.56 lakh children across the state. Officials said the online process aims to maintain transparency during the selection and allotment stages. Applications submitted by families are verified before students are included in the lottery draw that determines seat allocation in participating schools.
Several districts recorded relatively higher numbers of admissions during the initial phases. The largest number of seats was allotted in Lucknow, where more than 15,500 children secured admissions across both rounds. Other districts with significant participation included Kanpur Nagar and Varanasi, each reporting thousands of seat allotments through the process. Admissions were also notable in districts such as Agra, Moradabad, Aligarh, Bulandshahr, Meerut, and Ghaziabad. Education officials said applications from many other districts are also being processed as part of the remaining admission phases.
Under the RTE Act, private schools are required to reserve a certain percentage of seats for children belonging to economically weaker sections and disadvantaged groups. These students receive free education under the policy. Authorities indicated that additional phases of the admission process will be conducted in the coming weeks. The remaining rounds are expected to provide further opportunities for eligible applicants who have not yet secured seats during the earlier lottery stages. Officials said the system will continue to rely on online applications and verification procedures to manage the remaining admissions across districts in the state.
