A bakery chain with dozens of stores has closed a popular branch in Nottinghamshire, prompting a flood of tributes. Birds Bakery has become something of an institution in the East Midlands, building up a portfolio of around 60 locations across Notts and Derbyshire.

But in a fresh blow for the UK high street, the family-run brand said it had taken the "difficult" decision to close its store on Derby Road in Stapleford town centre, citing a "significant decline in trade" in the area. The shutters were pulled down for good on Saturday, March 14, and locals voiced their sadness about the news.

Larry's Bar, a fellow Derby Road business, hailed the staff in a touching post on Facebook, writing: "Thank you very much to all the wonderful ladies that have worked there over the years.

"Always a very friendly welcome and a smile from them all. A much established local business that will be sadly missed by all the regular customers," the post added, as per Nottinghamshire Live.

Another wrote: "Going to miss your welcome and crusty cobs but picked up my pork pies for the year today. Good luck ladies and thank you all."

A third added: "Such high quality cakes. Lovely staff, will miss this great local bakery, shopped here for years."

A fourth said: "I wish all u ladies all the very best for the future ! Such a sad day for stapleford."

"Can't believe its going, been there since I can remember," said another disappointed local, adding: "Wish the staff all the best x."

Birds is carrying out a rolling programme of shop rebrands, changing its classic burgundy colour scheme to pale green as well as modernising interior, but sadly Stapleford wasn't part of their future plans.

A spokesperson for chain said: "This has been a difficult decision and not one that has been taken lightly. The area has experienced a significant decline in trade in recent years, reflecting the wider challenges facing high streets across the country and we have had to carefully consider what is sustainable for the future.

"We regularly review our locations so we can adapt to changing customer needs and ensure the long-term strength for the business.

"We are grateful for the dedication and hard work of everyone who has worked at the Stapleford store, past and present."
