Without fail, every year, I will indulge in an Easter egg (or two, or three). There's something special about cracking open the delicious chocolate egg to see what surprise is awaiting you while you munch on the shell. Usually, I'll grab a basic supermarket option, but I have never tried anything luxurious.

As supermarket chocolate Easter eggs are getting more expensive while their quality, taste, and size are going down, I decided to finally treat myself to a more expensive egg to see if splurging on some fancy chocolate is worth the hype and the money. I taste-tested Hotel Chocolat's £90 Classic Ostrich Easter Egg, which weighs over one kilo; here are my honest thoughts.

What do you get in the Classic Ostrich Easter Egg?

A spokesperson on Hotel Chocolat's website wrote: "With over a kilo of top-quality, high-cacao chocolate to enjoy, you can make this Easter the most delicious and indulgent yet.

"Packed with crunchy cookies, puffed rice, and crispy feuilletine, it's a delight for the taste buds. Any chocolate lover is sure to appreciate the selection of 20 premium truffles, pralines, caramels, and patisserie chocolates."

The easter egg is split into two; one side is 50% milk with crispy feuilletine pieces and the other is 40% milk with crunchy cookies and puffed rice. Both eggs offer an array of premium chocolate pieces with different flavours.

The flavours of the small pieces inside the egg:

  • Champagne

  • Dark Rum

  • Strawberry Cheesecake

  • Salted Caramel Brownie

  • Trillionaire's Shortbread

  • Peanut Butter

  • Passion Fruit

  • Salted Caramel 40%

  • Gianduja Bombe

  • Dizzy Praline 70%

  • Signature Praline

  • My honest thoughts

Hotel Chocolat is not only luxurious because of the quality of its chocolate, which uses cacao beans from its own Rabot Estate in Saint Lucia, but also because of the experience from the moment you make a purchase. The packaging is so beautiful that you almost don't want to open it.

This Ostrich egg came in a beautiful cream casing which was easy to pop open after running some scissors across the top. Inside the casing was a jaw-dropping golden egg. What made it unique was that the egg was already separated for you, but was tied together with a thick white ribbon.

When taking both sides out of the casing, the egg was truly heavy and almost the size of my head. As I carefully removed the golden wrapping, every new reveal into the egg left us going "ooo" and "wow".

The egg was truly thick and looked irresistible; however, breaking off pieces to share proved surprisingly easy, and no matter how long I held the chocolate in my hand, it barely melted on my fingers.

But to sum up the taste in just six words: A little goes a long way.

This chocolate is truly rich, indulgent and decadent. I really loved the 40% side, which had the cookie pieces and puffed rice. My mum, who is more of a sweets fan than a chocolate fan, especially enjoyed the crunch of the puffed rice, which she said reminded her of Rice Krispies.

Another chocolate my family noted felt similar is Nestlé's Lion bar but without the caramel. However, we didn't enjoy the second side of the egg as much as it was a darker chocolate but still enjoyable and less sweet in a postive way.

My cousin, who is a loyal Hotel Chocolat fan, even stated that just a few bites were enough for her. I think this egg is great to gift a large family or someone who enjoys eating chocolate for a long period of time.

I think the price is a bit steep, but after tasting a supermarket egg, the quality from Hotel Chocolat is out of this world. You also recieve 20 other chocolates, which a tray of 18 would set you back £24 alone. My favourite pieces were the Salted Caramel Brownie, the Trillionaire's Shortbread, and the Strawberry Cheesecake.

Overall, if you can afford it, I think it is worth treating yourself to something luxurious once in a while, especially at Easter. Hotel Chocolat offers a range of Easter products at more affordable prices, including the Everything Extra-Thick Easter Egg for £34.95.

Elsewhere, there are more affordable Easter Egg options at M&S, Asda, Sainsbury's, and other national supermarkets.

    Other people's reviews

One reviewer who gave the egg five stars stated: "You can't get better. Best egg in the world by far. How an Easter egg really should be."

Another added: "Amazing egg, highest quality chocolate and packaging - a very special treat." A third said: "The best Easter egg I've ever had, worth every penny and will definitely be buying again."

However, one less enthused customer shared: "I'm not entirely sure how you are justifying the price of this egg. Yes, it's a lot thicker than a normal average Easter egg with better quality chocolate; however, I was expecting a massive egg, and it was tiny compared to the price you pay. Disappointed, and only half of the egg is actually nice."

Nonetheless, someone else said: "Beautifully wrapped in a lovely container. The chocolate egg was thick and smooth and very tasty - the additional chocolate sweets were a real bonus and disappeared quickly! 10/10."
