Millions of benefit claimants will receive more money from the state in a matter of days, as the new financial year ushers in revised payment rates. The beginning of April annually sees a range of benefits go up, alongside bills and taxes, including a state pension increase in line with the triple lock and a Universal Credit hike in line with the standard universal credit allowance. The state pension will rise by around £574.60 a year from next month, thanks to the triple lock, which picks the highest out of wage growth, inflation or 2.5%.

UK pensioners will see an increase from £230.25 per week to £241.30 per week as a result, bringing the full annual state pension to £12,547.60. Universal Credit recipients will also benefit from an increase of 6.2% on April 1, with the standard allowance rising from £316.98 to £338.58 per month for single people under 25 and £497.55 to £528.34 per month for couples under 25.

Meanwhile, those on UC with children will see rates increase from £339 per month to £351.88 for first children born before April 6, 2017.

Those with children born on or after April 6, 2017, will see rates rise from £292.81 per month to £303.94.

Most benefits will rise by 3.8% next month, after it was confirmed that UK inflation remained unchanged at that level in September, defying expectations that it would hit 4%.

The state pension will see a larger increase of 4.8% due to the triple lock, however, while Universal Credit sees a "rebalancing" rise, increasing standard allowances by approximately 6.2%.

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) is legally required to increase these benefits in line with inflation each April, with others instead subject to parliamentary approval.
