A single mum was overcome with emotion and reduced to tears after being gifted a staggering £10k to invest in her business on the popular programme, Rich House, Poor House. Lyndsay, who previously operated a small childminding enterprise, featured on the Channel 5 hit show alongside her 21 year old daughter Katie. The pair reside in a two-bedroom ground floor housing association flat in Sussex. Regrettably, Lyndsay had to abandon her job eight years ago following a hysterectomy. She subsequently developed arthritis and fibromyalgia, a chronic ailment with no known cure, which results in widespread pain and fatigue.
Currently, Lyndsay gets by on weekend receptionist work and benefits. This means they only have £91 disposable income per week. It's not just Lyndsay's health that has made it difficult for her to work full time, as seven years ago Katie developed a rare pancreatic disease. The mother and daughter team swapped homes with multi-millionaire couple Rachel and Steve, who operate a recycled gift packaging business, reports the Mirror.
The couple, who met 12 years ago, live in a luxurious £2million Sussex home, boasting an outdoor pool, 1.2 acres of garden and despite being just the two of them, they have three spacious living rooms.
In addition to exchanging homes, the families swap lifestyles, attending each other's events and living on each other's budgets.
Rachel and Steve had to make do with £91 for the week, whilst Lyndsay and Katie were left gobsmacked to discover they had thousands to splurge in the same timeframe.
However, emotions ran high for Rachel and Steve after learning about Lyndsay and Katie's situation, they were eager to lend a hand.
Meeting up after their home swap, Rachel queried Katie: "Now you've got your health issues, hopefully behind you. What next? What are the big dreams?"
Katie disclosed: "I definitely want to become a pilot in the future." Rachel moved the 21 year old as she responded: "Everybody said Katie, that has been your goal. So what we'd like to do to help you on that road is buy you five lessons."
Katie responded: "It's always been my dream, hasn't it since I was three to be a pilot." Rachel and Steve have given serious thought to how they can assist Lyndsay get back on her feet.
Shifting her focus to Lyndsay, she stated: "What we learn is that you wanted to set up another business. So, I went to see a playgroup and I was talking to lots of mums there about what's needed in Worthing. An idea was floated, but said, "What about some kind of childcare agency?"
She went on: "You wouldn't actually be looking after the children yourselves, but an agency that offers the people that you can then manage. You can literally do it online and fit the hours around you."
In an emotional moment, Rachel disclosed: "We would be happy to invest £10,000 in helping you set up the business." Lyndsay was brought to tears as she expressed: "I don't really know what to say. I'm going to start crying. Thank you."
She continued: "Just kind of was this constant circle, wasn't it? And like me trying to support Katie and she's supporting me. I'm really grateful. And I will not let you down. I'm gonna put everything into this and the opportunities that you're gonna give Katie."
Rachel further stated: "We just want to see you get your lives back and be able to move forward. Let's do it."
