In today's fast-paced world, many of us yearn for a peaceful night's sleep. While experts recommend 7-8 hours of rest, what if someone were to sleep for weeks or even months? This may sound like a plot from a fantasy film, but the village of Kalachi in Kazakhstan presents a startling reality. According to reports, residents often fall into deep slumber while talking, walking, or even working in their offices. The village is so quiet that for months, no noise can be heard, as those asleep remain undisturbed even by loud explosions.
This village is also referred to as the 'Sleepy Hollow.' While everyone needs sleep in their busy lives, the inhabitants of Kalachi take it to an entirely different level, as each person succumbs to prolonged and deep sleep.
What Causes This Sleep?
Scientific research indicates that the primary reason for this unusual phenomenon is the contaminated water in the village. The water in Kalachi contains carbon monoxide, which seeps from a nearby uranium mine. This is why residents can sleep for months on end. Studies have shown that they do not have trouble waking up, but they are often distressed by their extended slumber. Sleeping in public places poses a risk for them, as their sleep is so deep that no external noise can rouse them.
What Do They Experience Upon Waking?
Residents of Kalachi report that when they awaken from their long sleep, they often lose track of how much time has passed. Their minds feel numb, and they are affected by a dreamlike state. Gradually, they become aware of their surroundings. Some individuals claim that this prolonged sleep disrupts their daily activities and lifestyle, yet the villagers have come to accept it as a normal part of life.
When Was This First Discovered?
This issue was first noted in 2010 when several children fell asleep in their classrooms and could not be awakened for days. Teachers and school management attempted to rouse them, but to no avail. It was later discovered that nearly 14% of the village's population was affected. Following this, scientists began studying the village's water and environment. Since then, Kalachi has been known as 'Sleepy Hollow,' making it a unique place in the world.
