The water in Kalachi contains carbon monoxide, which seeps from a nearby uranium mine. This is why residents can sleep for months on end. Studies have shown that they do not have trouble waking up, but they are often distressed by their extended slumber. Sleeping in public places poses a risk for them, as their sleep is so deep that no external noise can rouse them.
