Wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson faced another disappointing performance for Chennai Super Kings during their IPL 2026 match against Punjab Kings at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, also known as Chepauk, on April 3.

This season marks Samson's debut with CSK after being traded from Rajasthan Royals, where he spent 11 seasons. The trade involved Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran moving to Rajasthan in exchange for Samson, a significant deal aimed at strengthening CSK's batting lineup.

Excitement surrounded Samson's transfer, especially after his stellar performance in the T20 World Cup 2026, where he played pivotal roles in matches against West Indies, England, and New Zealand, leading India to victory and earning the Player of the Tournament title.

Samson's Performance Underwhelms

Unfortunately, Sanju Samson's inaugural season with CSK has not met expectations. In the opening match against his former team, Rajasthan Royals, he scored only six runs, dismissed by Nandre Burger in Guwahati.

Fans hoped for a turnaround in his first home game at Chepauk, given the supportive crowd and familiar conditions. However, he fell short again, scoring just seven runs off seven balls, dismissed by Xavier Bartlett on the last ball of the second over, leaving CSK in a precarious position early in their innings.

Fan Reactions and Future Prospects

Despite his T20 World Cup success, Samson's inability to perform in the initial matches of IPL 2026 has sparked frustration among fans and raised questions about his ability to replicate his international form.

Social media platforms buzzed with reactions, as fans expressed disbelief and disappointment over his performance, labeling his dismissal as a significant setback for CSK. Many criticized his shot selection and footwork, suggesting he might benefit from batting lower in the order to regain his rhythm.

The trade deal that brought Samson to CSK, reportedly worth INR 18 crore, has added pressure on him to deliver for the five-time IPL champions. Throughout his IPL career, he has accumulated 4,717 runs, including three centuries and 26 fifties, with an average of 30.62 and a strike rate of 138.75 across 179 matches.
