Air India Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director Campbell Wilson has stepped down from his position, according to sources familiar with the development.

Wilson, who took charge in July 2022, had been leading the Tata Group-owned airline following Ilker Ayci’s decision to decline the role earlier that year amid controversy. The Tata Group had officially taken over Air India from the Government of India in January 2022.

According to a source, Wilson communicated his intention to resign to the airline’s Board before formally stepping down. An official response from Air India regarding the development is still awaited.

Earlier this year, reports suggested that the Tata Group had begun searching for a potential successor, as Wilson’s five-year term was scheduled to run until 2027.

Meanwhile, leadership gaps persist within the airline group. Air India Express, the low-cost subsidiary of Air India, has been without a head since March 19, following the exit of its Managing Director Aloke Singh after completing his five-year tenure.

Wilson has faced criticism in recent months, particularly after the June 12 crash of a London-bound Air India flight shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad. The tragic incident involved a Boeing 787-8 aircraft and resulted in the deaths of 241 of the 242 people on board.
