*Warning - contains spoilers for The Testaments*

Disney+ viewers have been left "sobbing" following an unexpected development in the brand new dystopian drama.

The streaming platform has at last unveiled its eagerly awaited new drama The Testaments, which is connected to The Handmaid's Tale.

Today (Wednesday, 8th April), viewers have been given the first three episodes from the 10-part season in one sitting, with the remaining instalments from the series broadcasting weekly on Wednesdays on Disney+ in the UK and Hulu in the US.

The drama unfolds four years following the events of The Handmaid's Tale series finale and the rebellion in Massachusetts, tracking the young women of Gilead, reports the Mirror.

However, during the opening episode, numerous fans were left shouting at their television screens following one surprising development. One recognisable face has made their comeback to Gilead in the dystopian drama.

Audiences were thrilled to see none other than June Osborne, with Elisabeth Moss reprising her iconic role.

Taking to X, one individual posted: "Yeaaaahhh my girl June is back and ion think she coming to play with nobody in Gilead."

Another posted: "OMG I FREAKED WHEN I SAW JUNE AT THE END OF EPISODE 1!!!!!!!! AHHHHHHH." A third noted: "OMG JUNE IM SO HAPPY."

A fourth responded: "i didnt think elizabeth moss would actually appear in the show the way i gagged ?? i teared up like im sorry but june is my princess." A fifth remarked: "Best part of #thetestaments is June from #thehandmaidstale Gosh it turns out I missed this show universe so much."

One viewer agreed: "Episode one was good! It was great seeing June again!!", while another wrote: "ONG OMG OMG JUNE AJDJAIFNSODBSJ."

The extent of June's involvement in forthcoming episodes remains unclear, though the beloved character looms large over this world, which unfolds after her uprising and centres on her daughter.

Showrunner Bruce Miller explained to the Hollywood Reporter: "There's an aspect of superhero to June that we wanted to have in this, because her shadow is over the whole show. She's looming over the whole thing."

He continued: "June would always be in this show. It's a show about her daughter, and she certainly would be very curious about what happened and would be as influent in that life as she could be."

The television adaptation of The Testaments takes place roughly four years following the conclusion of The Handmaid's Tale series finale when June orchestrated a rebellion in Boston, a departure from Margaret Atwood's novel which is set 15 years after the events of The Handmaid's Tale.

The Testaments continues Wednesdays on Disney+.
