Aldi has announced it will install solar panels at a 62 more stores across the UK this year as it continues with the expansion of its solar rollout. The German supermarket chain, which has more than 1,050 stores across the UK, says it builds on the istallation of panels at more than 470 stores across its estate in Britain.

The latest phase sees Aldi investing £8.4 million to install solar panels at 100 branches across 2025 and 2026. The high street giant has emphasised the energy benefits, noting that each installation can provide up to 30% of a store's annual energy requirements.

This helps Aldi generate "more of its electricity on site and strengthen energy resilience across its estate". It's aiming to roll out solar panels to its branches in Stratford-upon-Avon, Maghull, Northampton and Wrexham in the near future.

Jonathan Neale, Aldi UK's Managing Director of National Real Estate, said: "We've made significant progress over the past year, and we are advancing the next phase of our solar rollout across even more stores in 2026.

"The programme has expanded to cover even more sites than originally planned, and through ongoing investment in our estate, we're making our operations more resilient while ensuring we continue to deliver great value for customers in a more sustainable way."

Aldi employs more than 45,000 people across the UK and continues to expand rapidly, with plans to launch 40 new stores this year as part of a £370 million investment programme.

It's also investing "an additional £300 million in upgrading and extending existing stores, reinforcing its position as one of Britain's fastest-growing food retailers", the retailer said previously.

The move is part of Aldi's £1.6billion two-year investment strategy which was announced last year, as it looks to achieve its long-term abition of having 1,500 stores in the UK.

At the start of the month, Aldi also became the first UK supermarket to introduce a £13.50 minimum pay rate, in a boost for its workforce. From Wednesday, April 1, Store Assistants working at UK branches are earning £13.50 per hour nationally, while those working inside in the M25 are now getting £14.88-per hour.

The rates rise to £14.47 and £15.20, respectively, based on length of service. Aldi says the change will benefit 28,000 hourly-paid store workers.

It marks the second pay rise for Aldi teams in 2026, after January's announcement of enhanced rates and extended maternity pay to 26 weeks at full pay.
